Shadow and Light


I played a bit with the new lens, and in following my rules, this photo gets no editing... unfortunately for his face. It's probably easy enough to dodge and fix it in photoshop, right? How would I avoid something like this in natural lighting without post processing, though? Just don't take pictures of people in caps?

  1. Is this with a 50mm prime lens? That is a must have. I don't think his face is too underexposed, but if you want you could either use a reflector or set your flash to do balanced exposure about 1.5 to 2 stops below the metered value to fill the shadows—a side benefit is you get catchlights in the eyes (there's usually a setting for flash exposure compensation).
